A Year in the Real World Six New Grads Weigh In on Life After College

A Year in the Real World Six New Grads Weigh In on Life After CollegeA Year in the Real World Six New Grads Weigh In on Life After CollegeIn June 2013, Simply Hired brought on a team of new college grads. Most of them started a few weeks after their college graduation. This June, we checked in with them to see what theyve learned in the past year, how theyve changed, and what advice they have for others who are just starting out.Heres what they saidAdapting to life on the jobIn school its more sporadic, you go class for a few hours, have homework on these days. Now free time is more limited. Im going to work at the same time everyday, eating at the same time, going to the gym at the same time. Its a lot more structured. AriannaThe best part is no homework On Sundays I dont think about that I have to go to the library for five hours. I can do whatever I want with that day. DylanFiguring out what to do socially welches a change. In school there welches always homework to think about. Now I go to the gym after work or go to happy hour with my friends. JoyThe hardest thing to adapt to welches working for eight hours. In the beginning, my brain would start to melt at about 300. But now I can work all day and be productive. When things come up, I can now work long hours. Ive done a few 12-13 hour days no problem. JustinIts tough to work on 4 hours of sleep a night. Its one thing to go to class. Its another to work for 8 hours. DylanI feel like college was this incredible experience and I learned so much about so many things, and then once I left, I felt like I didnt know anything. I dont think anyone prepares you for life after college in the way my friends and I experienced it. No one tells you how hard the first year is. Youre learning how to live life on your own, how to be in a big girl job, pay your rent, manage your time, manage your money, make your own decisions, but kind of mucksmuschenstill listen to your parents, and also you have to answer to your bo ss. No one really tells you, you just have to figure it out as time goes by. AriannaCollege was a breeze compared to being an adult. The real world is humbling. Working has helped me become a better human. I realized I can help people in a greater way than I thought, and I might be able help people in ways I dont even know yet. AndreThe power of sticking with itThe commute was really hard to adapt to. The first few months were tough. Every day I came in frustrated, but eventually learned to enjoy it instead of fight it. DylanYou cant just not show up when you dont feel like it. Ive learned that doing things I didnt want to do makes me more disciplined. You can show up every day and get better at it. It surprised me that I could enjoy doing this and be good at it. AndrePatience is a necessary quality to have. In sales, you have to contact people several times, and you wonder why they dont get back to you. Patience is also really important when going through organizational changes , when everything is not clearly defined. JoyWhen I started out, I didnt know it was normal to feel as lost as I did. I felt like maybe I had lucked into a job I didnt deserve, because everyone sounded so smart and knew all these technologies Id never heard of. My manager eventually told me that every engineering job is like that for the first few months. Now Im leading projects and now helping make high-level architectural decisions with senior engineers. JustinIt was surprising to see the people on our team that left. It seems better to stick with something you dont like until you find something you really want to do, than to go from something you dont like to something you dont like. DylanDont give up at the first sign of your life not being in this perfect box. Just because youre struggling, you cant quit in the first months. When summers over youre still workingwhen the holidays roll around, youre still working. You cant take all that time off. You have to power through it. Its so fulfilling when you get through that first work struggle. It takes a lot of initiative to talk to your boss when youre struggling, but they can help you. Dont give up and just try to get another job. AriannaAdvice for new grads in their first jobsIf youre too scared to do what you want to do, you can still fail at what you dont want to do. So you should really think about what you want. DylanKeep a business journal. Business is done through personal connections. I make notes about who I meet, where I met them, and the context. Then months later I can go back and make connections. DillonOpen a savings account immediately, set an auto deposit, and dont look at it. Pretty soon Ill have enough to travel. DylanIn school there is not much regret about decisions. The decisions you make now impact you far more personally than the decisions you make in school. DillonAdvice to new grads looking for a jobNetworking with alumni is really important. Everyone is so connected. Have inf ormational interviews, and learn as much as you can. Dive in and talk to people. AriannaMake aya you know what the job entails. Ask about responsibilities, room for growth, what other team people are doing, where theyve ended up after one year. JoyIf you make that decision to commute more than an hour each way, make sure you really want to do that thing. DillonBe picky with the job you take- dont settle. If you have a little bit of time, take it. Wait for what you want, dont take a job just to take a job. DylanThink critically and comprehensively about places youre looking at, utilize every source you can. Use Yahoo Finance, LinkedIn, research everything surrounding the company. A few of the companies I applied to had bad things happen. Im lucky that I ended up at good company. Research will make you content with where you end up. DillonBe aggressive about your future. Use LinkedIn. Reach out to people, send messages, say youre interested. Have your parents pay for LinkedIn Prem ium. Get involved with your community. Every little bit counts. AndreThe company isnt just interviewing you, you are interviewing the company. I have some friends hate who their jobs. Make sure to know as much you can about the culture, think about whether you would really enjoy it. JustinJoin us in congratulating Joy, Arianna, Dillon, Justin, Dylan, and Andre on their first year of employment after college. We wish them all the best for the future

Introduce Yourself to a New Way of Introduction

Introduce Yourself to a New Way of Introduction Having a well-developed professional network almost inevitably leads to occasions for connecting people you know with new opportunities. Sometimes you may find yourself as the catalyst for a relationship between a contact looking to fill a position and an ideal candidate who you know would be a great fit. This a positive development for all involved as it helps out the people you know, builds stronger relationships between you and your contacts, and grows your reputation. But it isnt always simple to untangle a maze of connections to determine who should meet whom. If youre ever asked to set up an introduction between members of your network, follow this set of tips to help smooth the process1. Never make a cold introduction. The first step to making a quality introduction is to make sure that each party is informed and prepared to meet each other. C old intros are awkward and potentially embarrassing affairs that can leave your contacts feeling uncertain of how to act and potentially resentful of you for the impromptu meeting. All you have to do is send a short musiknote to the involved persons informing them of the context of the introduction and what to expect at the meeting. Depending on your own relationship with your contacts, it may be more appropriate to first ask permission to schedule an introduction in the first place.2. Remember that you are introducing people because you think there is a reason they should meet, so it is up to you to ensure both parties understand what that reason is. This is especially helpful because it gives them some common ground on which to begin a conversation. The more your contacts know about the motivational details of the meeting, the more useful an introduction can become.3. Once you move beyond your immediate circle of friends and peers, it becomes more necessary to be aware of the powe r dynamics between people you intend to connect. You have to make sure that what you are asking is appropriate, especially if you are asking a favor of someone. For example, committing the time of a busy senior executive to speak with a clearly unqualified (but nice) friend would be an obvious no-no. Also, acknowledge those times that you are asking a favor of someone by using appropriate wording such as Id appreciate if you would or Would you do me a favor?4. Finally, you dont always have to make connections yourself. By remaining polite and tactful, you can turn down requests for introductions if they make you feel uncomfortable or strike you as inappropriate. It is, after all, your network, and you have built your professional relationships over time and should work to be respectful to your contacts and their time. Liaising for your business connections can help build your network, breed trust and appreciation, and lead to positive relationships between your network contacts, but when faced with a situation that may waste someones time, it is best to simply turn down a request.

7 things successful people never apologize for at work

7 things successful people never apologize for at work7 things successful people never apologize for at workIf you work, you have guilt. Whether its deadlines, time with family or shutting off email, its easy to fall into the trap of believing we owe our whole lives to our employers and, as a result, apologizing all the time.We can even end up apologizing for things were good at. What about that time you finished a project early and your co-worker gave you some side-eye, so you apologize for being ahead of the curve? Or when you got a promotion and someone at your same level was passed over - did you drop that sorry bomb then, too? While being mindful and grateful are always important qualities of any successfuls persons career path, it is also important to be confident and bold with your abilities and responsibilities. Being self-assured is an attractive career quality. False humility can be cloying and will make people dislike you.Confidence should be your greatest tool for your c areer- assuming of course that you are in a job that fits your skills. Without confidence your employer would not have found you. Everything about the job search, and being promoted in your career is supported by confidence, executive career coach Tina Mertel explains. Confidence allows you to state what you deserve, whats not working, and what you want. Confidence helps you build relationships with those you manage, your peers, your customers, and your vendors. Without confidence you may be hoping to be noticed or wondering why your work isnt recognized. Here are things you should never (ever) apologize for at workThings That Are Out Of Your ControlAs a hard-working professional, there are certain parts of your career that you should take ownership of meeting deadlines, being an active participant in meetings and following directions. But regardless of industry, there are certain experiences and outcomes that frankly, you just cant control, no matter how well you do your job. A lot of those things are related to how other people, or other kollektivs, behave. Take for example if a client misinterprets you, and you thought you were very clear, Mertel says. You should go to the facts, relay them to your manager, and ask or suggest what should be done next. Skip the apology. While it can be an unfortunate situation that puts your company or manager in a bad light, if you did everything you could to do your job, you shouldnt apologize for a reaction that you couldnt predict. For Working Faster Than OthersSo your bestie likes to spend a lot of time catching up on the Facebook interwebs and on G-chat, but when it comes to her deadlines at work, shell wait until the last, hottest, second to submit her work. We all have different working styles, and while neither are right or wrong, neither warrant an apology, either. Sometimes, people feel uncomfortable if they hand in their portion of an assignment early. Its good to be prompt and responsible, explains Amy Cooper Hak im, Ph.D., an industrial-organizational psychology practitioner and workplace expert. Submitting work early shows that youve planned your time well and that you are organized and on top of things. For Standing Up When Something Doesnt Sit RightThough its true that no one likes a tattle-tale, its also true that your gut is the smartest source you have at your disposal. If you do see something that you know could pose a threat to an employee or the company as a whole, you have to follow that Spidey-sense and say something. If you state your truth, it may be uncomfortable but needed, Mertel says. If you witness an act against company policy, you should report it to menschenwrdig resources. It doesnt make sense to apologize to another for reporting them. You are simply prioritizing company policy and most likely your job in front of a friendship or relationship. For Being Vocal in a MeetingIts sometimes simpler to nod along instead of engaging your brain in every long meeting. But, if y oure not engaged, then youre not a productive member of the team. However, as business psychologist, career coach and content director, Kate Sullivan explains, if you do have a useful opinion in a meeting, you should never apologize for sharing it with the group.Dive right into your point.Meetings are meant for an exchange of ideas- if everything was completely decided and no input was needed, youd probably get a memo instead. So dont feel guilty for giving your input- thats what the meeting is for, she notes. Instead of apologizing for speaking- the dreaded Im sorry, but or Excuse me, but interjection- just speak up when theres a break in the dialogue. This is important If you really need to give yourself a lead-in, link it to what someone else is saying instead of apologizing for speaking. Try saying to build on what Dan just said or An interesting thing Jill, if you look at the figures, I think youll see thatJust make sure youre not talking so much that other people are shutting down. For Focusing on Your WorkThough water-cooler chit-chat can be engaging and ripe with gossip, its not a productive way to spend your workday, when really, youd probably rather get home to your partner or out to happy hour with your friends earlier than later. If one of your co-workers tries to loop you into a conversation, dont apologize for needing to get back to work. As Hakim says, youre there for a purpose and it doesnt need an explanation. Politely and directly, share that you have a deadline and look forward to chatting another time. But, never say that you are sorry for doing so.For Taking a Vacation or Personal DaysRepeat after us vacations are necessary. Did you say it out loud? No? Say it now. As Sullivan reminds us, breaks are not only needed but theyre healthy for our mental health and happiness. ur careers cant flourish unless we take time for self-care, and lounging on a beach or gallivanting about Europe will help you disconnect. Rather than skipping your vacation or apologizing for requesting time off, think about it as a financial transaction. How many vacation days do you have in the bank? Two weeks? How much is your average biweekly paycheck? Now think about giving up a full paycheck and working for free for two weeks. Doesnt feel great, huh?, Sullivan asks. Thats what giving up your vacation is- giving up compensation that youre owed. Apologizing for asking for part of your compensation doesnt make sense its like saying youre sorry for asking for your paycheck. Take your vacation with no guilt and no apologies. Youve literally earned itFor Setting Boundaries on Your Own TimeYou never need to say youre sorry for logging off, taking off or removing yourself from situations that make you uncomfortable as an employee. You work a certain set of hours in the day and its perfectly okay to not be available at midnight or on a Sunday. Be clear about when you will and wont work and stick to that without apologizing. Its your right to have persona l time- and itll set a good example for other people on your team to start dialing back their availability and putting some boundaries on their life balance, Sullivan says. That will help everyone on your team perform better, because theyll be able to recharge outside the office instead of constantly checking in.

These companies value the life experiences Baby Boomers bring to the table and may be a good career change fit. Green jobs. For many Baby Boomers, career change isnt just about paying the bills. Its a search for something that matters. An encore career, as its been dubbed, is an excellent way to both work and contribute to a greater cause. If sustainability and the environment are important to you, consider a gree n job.
